Week 10: Layers of Earth, Convection Cells, and Plate Tectonics
What did you do in the lab today? Today in the lab, we created the four examples of what happens at plate boundaries. The Graham crackers/rice cakes act as a plate, and the whipped cream is magma. We conducted four examples of what happens to plates when they collide, sink, or spread apart.
What was the big question?
-What are the layers of the Earth?
-What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics?
-What can form at the three types of boundaries?
What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?
I learned that the Appalachian mountains were once connected to mountains in Africa, but the Appalachian mountains experience more erosion, so they are shorter in height than the mountain range in Africa.

What did you learn? -The flow of liquid metals creates Earth's magnetic field, which is why compasses always point north. The magnetic field protects the planet from extreme weather and radiation in space
What was most helpful? I like the images of the continents as they were breaking apart, so we can see how they were once formed together during Pangaea, and then broke apart
What do you need more information on? How does the solid inner core of our Earth protect us from dying?
