Week 11 Blog

What did you learn this week?

This week, I learned that when you put Diet Coke and regular Coke into the water, only the regular Coke sinks.  Although I do not know why the regular Coke sinks, my group concluded that the regular Coke may have more sugar, which makes it heavier and sinks. Additionally, Diet Coke may have more carbonation, which is made of air, so it floats.

How can you relate what you already knew to what you learned?

This week, we combined baking soda and vinegar in a bag and closed the bag. As we observed the bag, I remember watching the vinegar and baking soda make bubbles and fizz as a kid. I also remember the awful odor that came from this experiment. As kids, we never looked at the consistency of the vinegar after the experiment. I learned that when you mix the two together, their consistency becomes thicker, and then the vinegar and baking soda are separated.

What questions do you still have?
A question I am still confused about is why does a plunger not stick to the cardboard. Although I could predict the plunger to not stick to cardboard, I have never learned why a plunger does not stick to certain objects.
