What did I learn this week?
This week, we conducted an experiment where we soaked M&M's in water. I learned from the Press book reading that the higher the temperature of an object, in this case the MnM, the faster the particles move and the quicker the dye spreads out. The dye spreads out faster because the particles that make up the M&Ms are moving faster. When we conducted the experiment, red spread the fastest and the furthest, so I can assume that the atoms that make up the red M&M are at a higher temperature than the other colors.
How can you apply what you learned to what you already know?
In school, we had done this experiment and watched the M&Ms spread apart over time in the water. What I learned, though, is that the brown spread the most, following Orange and red. Yellow was overpowered and did not spread far. I learned that the M&Ms are composed of different atoms because of the colors' ability to spread faster and mix with others. In our experiment, brown mixed with green, but all of the other colors did not mix. I think the other colors did not mix because they are composed of atoms that, when they get too close to each other, they repel.
What questions do you still have?
I am confused on how color can change whether or not colors mixed together. What atoms are changing for the atoms to repel eacht oher rather than mix with each other? Even though they are the same object, why do they react differently in water?
