Week 3: The moon, phases, and Different Sides

  1. What did you do in the lab today?                                                                                                 We learned the phases of the moon and where the moon is located depending on what phase of the moon it is in. The second full moon in the same month is called a Blue Moon. We conducted an experiment to figure out why one side of the moon has more dark spots than the other side. We figured out the front side of the moon is thicker than the dark side.
  2. What was the big question?                                                                                                     What are the phases of the Moon and why do they occur?                                                How does the Moon affect life on Earth?                                                                           What have we learned about the Moon’s surface, structure, and history?
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?                                                                          I learned that we see more craters on the dark side, rather than the front side, because the front side's crust is thicker than the backside.
  4.    Textbook:
  1. What did you learn?                                                                                                                   I learned that it takes the moon 28 days to rotate on its axis because its rotation exactly matches the revolution time, which is why we never see its back side.
  2. What was most helpful?                                                                                                            What was most helpful was the image posted about the phases of the moon. It showed the moon in relation to the Earth and the sun. This helped me because I have a hard time understanding the phases of the moon based on its position in relation to the sun and Earth.
  3. What do you need more information on?                                                                                I need more information on how Earth's gravitational pull made the moon's dark side have a thicker crust.

5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have?                                                  N/A
