Week 8: Geology that kids see

 

  1. What did you do in the lab today? We observed rocks from around the world under a microscope. Then, we went to the Macbride Museum and looked at Iowa from the beginning of time.

  2. What was the big question? Explain changes in landscapes overtime​
  3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? I learned that we have glacier rocks all over Iowa, yet Iowa paid to have a glacier rock imported from England.​

                                                         What did you learn this week?       No matter how substances react during a chemical reaction, there is as much matter before the reaction is the same as there is afterward. To explain this phenomenon to a 5th grader, we weighed the baking soda, vinegar, and the bottle. After we had weighed the ingredients separately, we combined vinegar and baking soda in the bottle. After 30 seconds, we weighed the baking soda, vinegar, and the bottle.  What are the primary points in the video?  -Powerful people and lawmakers do not believe climate change is real, and are not slowing down productions that influence climate change. Burning fossil fuels and drilling in the Arctic are causing glaciers to melt, Miami to flood, and droughts to occur.  What are the major issues? -Burning fossil fuels vs. alternative options, but alternative options are expensive -Meat and oil for cooking have huge impacts on releasing CO2 into the atmosphere  -The Positive feedback loop between rising temperatures and causing glaciers to melt, which is causing temperatures to rise even more What questions do you want us to teach you?   -We don't ever learn how to prevent climate change on the local level How would you like us to teach you? -No preference  What did you do in the lab today? Week 10: Layers of Earth, Convection Cells, and Plate Tectonics

  What did you do in the lab today?  Today in the lab, we created the four examples of what happens at plate boundaries. The Graham crackers/rice cakes act as a plate, and the whipped cream is magma. We conducted four examples of what happens to plates when they collide, sink, or spread apart. What was the big question?  -What are the layers of the Earth? -What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics? -What can form at the three types of boundaries? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? I learned that the Appalachian mountains were once connected to mountains in Africa, but the Appalachian mountains experience more erosion, so they are shorter in height than the mountain range in Africa.  Textbook: What did you learn?  -The flow of liquid metals creates Earth's magnetic field, which is why compasses always point north.
