Week 9: Earthquakes and Volcanoes

What did you do in the lab today? Today, we investigated where volcanoes and earthquakes occur. We looked at where they occurred, and we guessed why they occurred in those spots. Also, we looked at three types of volcanoes; my group had cinder cone volcanoes.

What was the big question?

-How do volcanoes and earthquakes form?

-What are volcanoes and earthquakes?

-What are the dangers associated with volcanoes and earthquakes?

What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? I learned that there are two types of waves: P-waves: can travel through any type of material and S-waves: Can only travel through solid material

Textbook:

What did you learn? Island arc: a chain of islands in the ocean in an arc shape. Formed by two convergent oceanic plates and volcanic eruptions

What was most helpful? That you split up each different volcano and had two examples next to where the volcano can occur, rather than having all of the examples together in a distinct paragraph

What do you need more information on? Why did you say in class that if the volcano in Yellowstone erupted, everyone in Kansas would get hurt and/or die?

Also, what kind of material can S-waves travel through?

What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? N/A
